Nathan Cofnas is a leading HBD scholar, a rogue academic whose life’s work is promoting the notion that racial differences are real and matter and must be integrated into policy solutions. He’s not really saying anything new, of course, but he’s saying it as a (recently) respected mainstream academic, and as a serious Jewish man.
He’s frustrated that his winning coalition is a bunch of trailer park guys who aren’t respectable and serious and, well, you know. You get the point. According to him, Trump’s triumphant coalition are a confused and stupid rabble without a plan, without a vision. There’s not a proper intellectual vanguard here except for a Romanian American celebrity who writes cryptic Nietzschean book reports that have nothing to do with political strategy.
Here’s the most heated excerpt from his recent essay, “Was I Wrong About Woke?”
I know I’m literally the trailer park guy, but if I may.
The American right has no coherent message or ideology besides being against the left.
This isn’t true. Trump’s new Dark MAGA vision, distinguished from earlier, failed, renditions of MAGA, is indeed politicizing with a hammer at the moment, and could easily be mistaken for a reactionary movement. But it is quite concisely comprised of Victor Orban’s national populism and Yoram Hazony’s national conservatism, adapted to the American context — folk libertarianism, grassroots Christianity, moral panics, paranoid frenzies, capitalist hustling, and settler/colonial anxieties.
America First is the coherent message, and unlike in the first administration, there’s no stuttering or hesitating. Or perhaps put slightly differently: Americans First. It’s not merely a reaction to “woke,” unless perhaps one relies on the most expansive possible definition of “woke” as “anything and everything neoliberal.” Dark MAGA is indeed singularly fixated right now on destroying and replacing neoliberalism, but only because that’s what’s in its way and only after achieving its previous wrecking ball destruction of the neoconservative movement within the American Right.
Quite recently, the complaint about MAGA was that it was a reactionary movement against neoconservatism, with no purpose beyond attacking the establishment GOP.
It has no good answer to the major issue of our time, which is the question of lingering race disparities.
Cofnas’s life’s work is centered around a reductionist conviction that the primary thing in the way of the Right is the lack of belief in the hereditary nature of racial disparities. He’s incorrect on all counts here. First, Dark MAGA has a very clear and great answer to the question of lingering race disparities: ruthless pursuit of merit without regard for racial disparities. It’s an approach that’s working very well.
There’s a crippling fatigue with lingering race disparities, and a monomaniacal fixation on meritocracy is the passive-aggressive way to step over the “woke” neoliberal goal of resolving all of the racial disparities. “That’s a bummer for Tyrone that he can’t read. If he figures out how, we’ll be over here building rockets and robots.”
To understand how this moment is possible and why it’s happening at this very moment, one must understand the internal mechanisms of neoliberalism. When FDR began gearing up for WWII, he issued a memorandum demanding that prosecutors nationwide aggressively prosecute the last remnants of neoslavery, which had been permitted to carry on under various guises for generations. It had become geostrategically untenable to keep holding Blacks as slaves in our own backyard.
The relationship between geopolitics and domestic politics is tighter than is often realized, and this intensified throughout the Cold War with American domestic politics transformed by the need to counter Soviet propaganda that America was a White Supremacist evil empire of capitalist exploitation. The Wagner Act unions, Civil Rights Act initiatives, and revolutions in academia and popular media were all at the direction of the CIA and multinational corporations intent on maximizing their sphere of geostrategic influence, control, and exploitation.
America flipped on a dime in 1960s from a White Supremacist country to a White Saviorist country, achieving the transition to neoliberal neocolonialism, one where we were now meddling in the Global South to protect them from racism and exploitation. This eventually expanded to include protecting them from patriarchy, homophobia, transphobia, and fatphobia as neoliberalism grew derelict and deranged in its senescence.
But the same process that caused civil rights and woke killed it even more quickly than it brought it about. The Soviet Union imploded, replaced by a very different and very weakened Russia. China has rose to replace the USSR as our chief rival. The Global South no longer fears that America will be racist to them, but that it will promote feminism, obesity, atheism, and butt stuff.
I don’t blame them. We’re all scared.
China and Russia are now challenging America in geopolitics with messaging that America is woke. If you agree to American influence, you’ve got to agree to chicks with dicks. As such, the intelligence agencies, multinational corporations, and think tanks have been raising the alarm bells that a reversal is in order. The reversal has been due for several years now, but it took 10/7 to shock the West’s elites into recognizing the urgency of the matter.
I’ll leave it as an exercise to the reader why 10/7 especially caught the attention of the people at the helm of our intelligence agencies, multinational corporations, and think tanks. Spelling it out would discredit me with both sides of my readership, the Jewish and Zionist intellectuals who are neurotic about the subject and the other set of readers for whom it is the only subject.
The hegemonic neoliberal movement had become more than just awkward and annoying, but outright deleterious to the American Empire’s urgent geopolitical prerogatives. Woke was no longer a joke, and had to be swiftly put to sleep. We’re currently in the midst of that jarring transformation. There will be no “thermostatic” rebalancing, either. America needs to become competitive with China immediately, and its universities need to start training up engineers instead of brainwashed fools parroting obsolete twentieth century ideologies immediately. Permanently.
We have almost no effective institutions. We control literally zero serious PhD-granting universities. Even universities in solid red states remain in the hands of our opponents. Among graduate students and assistant professors at elite institutions, our representation is very close to zero percent.
It’s demonstrable that sweeping social, economic, and political change can occur entirely without the permission or support of traditional academia. I won’t bother to offer my detailed thoughts on academia, as I have no experience or standing. But if you can control the government and society without the “elite” institutions, are the institutions actually elite anymore? I suspect there’s some sentimentality going on here not altogether different from that which “journalists” still retain for a world that no longer exists. Are Harvard and Oxford the CNN and Time Magazine of academia?
After all, Cofnas’s substack and X accounts have been far more impactful than whatever he was doing in the bespoke, moldy limestone buildings he crawled out of.
The right has been shut out of editing Wikipedia—the most influential source of (alleged) information in our society.
This really irritates me, because there’s a very simple solution that I’ve already spelled out: Grokipedia. If Elon creates a mirror of Wikipedia that constantly mirrors the regular Wikipedia while allowing “Perspectives” on controversial articles, the Grok LLM will immediately become superior to the competition and it will rapidly become more popular than Wikimedia’s version. Easiest problem to solve in the history of big problems.
Conservative culture revolves largely around figures who are some combination of grifter, crackpot, criminal, conspiracy theorist, anti-Semite, or racist-in-a-bad-way.
A lot of this is just sneering and sniveling at stupid people. There is no way for me to be honest about the Jewish Mafia’s negative impact on America or honest about racial disparities without Nathan being disappointed in me because I’m literally me. Only the people in his circles are to discuss these matters.
Nathan’s gradually going to get his way, though, as his Jewish colleagues and respectable ivy league peers are warming up to Dark MAGA. People who aren’t gross trash are picking up on the pivot and he’ll get to have his aesthetically suitable intellectual circles. These things are coming together.
We produce virtually no art, music, or literature.
More sneering and sniveling at stupid people, as Dark MAGA is certainly in the lead on leading forms of creative expression defining our bizarre new world. Kamala had the painters, performers, and poets on lock, but Trump won with all of the people creating the creative products people are consuming. Nathan’s just subculturally invested in understanding creativity in twentieth century neoliberal terms.
Right-wing discourse is dominated by people doing 'physiognomy checks' on each other, calling Democrats pedophiles, and telling people not to get vaccinated and that they can cure their cancer with ivermectin.
Even more sneering! Antiparasitics are an important part of a balanced approach to resolving the chronic inflammation epidemic driving cancer diagnoses. Cope and seethe.
None of this was changed by the election of Donald Trump.
I’ve been hard on the “neowignats” for the last couple months for being livid that the world is changing in the right general direction, but not according to their choreographed metapolitical vision. They don’t want a pro-White government that’s rounding up illegal immigrants when it’s fervently Zionist. Similarly, Nathan’s irritated that Dark MAGA isn’t fancy and serious like he is. He’s mad because the stupid people have been invited along for the ride.
Tough. I’m with stupid, and I hope you join us. Elites are welcome onto the bandwagon, but this will not be an elitist revolution.
That's amazing writing. I'm envious at your ability in wordsmithing.
I sure hope you're right and we're going to have a Renaissance in STEM training for Americans. I'm grinding through a curriculum of electrical engineering physics and data science. I always wanted to be a college level professor perhaps that dream will come true after all. Or at least I can get a cushy office job being a smarty pants in STEM.
That was an excellent article! Very informative & put everyone under a microscope. Also just got done watching Matt Taibi-Tucker interview. They predicted the Trump admin will be pushing for 'Church Committee' like investigations & we will get a look behind the curtain. Seems like NeoLiberalism & Woke culture will take a hit. I don't see how 'Woke Capitalism' could fall when Wall Sreet created ES&G to protect itself. Matt is right in that we need to hold our noses as we congratulate 'Dark Maga' while acknowledging the imperfections of a Trump-Adelson administration.
